Three dynasties, two coasts and one stone-built story of peninsular India
1. The Big Picture: The Peninsula Connected Regions1.
Think of the Deccan plateau as a region of contact between north and south. Routes from the Narmada region towards the Tamil plains linked river valleys, passes and ports. Rulers who controlled them could move armies, collect agricultural revenue and connect Arabian Sea trade with Bay of Bengal trade. This helps explain the importance of Kanchi, Vatapi and Manyakheta.
- A dynasty is a ruling family. Its capital is the main seat of court and government, not necessarily the only important city. The Pallavas, Badami Chalukyas and Rashtrakutas did not follow one another as rulers of all India; their territories and periods overlapped.
- A feudatory is a subordinate ruler who keeps some local authority while owing service, tribute or troops to a more powerful king. A powerful subordinate could become independent. This helps explain the rise of Dantidurga and, later, Tailapa II.
- A prashasti praises a ruler or patron. A grant records a gift or transfer of specified rights. Patronage means supporting a person, institution or work with resources. These sources help us study power, but they must be compared rather than taken literally in every detail.
Pallavas of Kanchi
Core: northern Tamil country and southern Andhra. Their capital Kanchi was a political, learning and temple centre. Mamallapuram connected royal art with the Coromandel coast.
Chalukyas of Vatapi
Core: western Deccan, especially the Malaprabha valley. They balanced northern and southern forces and experimented boldly at Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal.
Rashtrakutas
Core: the Deccan, later centred on Manyakheta. Former Chalukya subordinates became imperial rulers whose armies reached Gujarat, Malwa, Kanauj and the far south.
Place memory: Pallava = Kanchi and the eastern coast; Chalukya = Badami rocks; Rashtrakuta = the wider Manyakheta network. Kanchi itself is inland, not directly on the seashore.
- Locate three rivers first: Narmada towards the northern Deccan frontier, Krishna across the Deccan, and Kaveri farther south in the Tamil region. They are orientation points, not permanent borders shared by all three dynasties.
- Vatapi is modern Badami in Karnataka. Manyakheta is modern Malkhed in Karnataka. Kanchi is Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu; coastal Mamallapuram is also called Mahabalipuram. Kanchi and Mamallapuram are separate places.
- The Arabian Sea lies west and the Bay of Bengal east. Western routes connected ports, horse traders and inland merchants; eastern routes linked the Tamil coast with Southeast Asia. A schematic map explains these directions, not exact ancient distances or roads.

Ask what each source can actually answer. A temple wall can preserve a donor’s name; its material and plan reveal craft and ritual. Sanskrit court poetry, Tamil devotion and Kannada poetics have different purposes. Coins and seals add royal symbols and exchange evidence. 2. The Dynasties - Rulers, Capitals and the Wars That Connected Them2.
Learn each royal house like a family story. First see who made the kingdom strong. Then see who fought, who rebuilt and what each reign left behind.
A. Pallavas - from Kanchi to the seaक.
Simhavishnu
c. late sixth century. Restored Pallava strength, extended influence into the Tamil country and prepared the clear historical line of the later Pallavas.
Mahendravarman Iमहेंद्रवर्मन प्रथम
c. 600-630. Scholar, artist and cave-temple patron. Wrote the comic Sanskrit play Mattavilasa Prahasana. Pulakeshin II pressed into his northern lands.
Narasimhavarman Iनरसिंहवर्मन प्रथम
c. 630-668. Called Mamalla, “great wrestler.” Reversed the war, captured Vatapi around 642 and earned the title Vatapikonda.
Paramesvaravarman Iपरमेश्वरवर्मन प्रथम
Faced renewed Chalukya attack under Vikramaditya I. Pallava-Chalukya war continued because neither frontier stayed permanently settled.
Known as Rajasimha. His age is linked with mature structural temples: Kanchi Kailasanatha and the Shore Temple complex at Mamallapuram.
Called Pallavamalla. Chosen from a collateral line in a succession crisis. Long reign; Vaikuntha Perumal temple preserves a visual royal genealogy.
A useful Pallava memory sequence is Mahendravarman’s cave halls, Mamalla’s rathas and reliefs, and Rajasimha’s structural temples. It summarises important associations, not three sealed stages in which an earlier method vanished. The Mandagapattu inscription, carved in a rock-cut shrine, celebrates a temple made without brick, timber, metal or mortar. It marks Mahendravarman's rock-cut patronage; it does not prove that earlier temples in other materials never existed.
B. Badami Chalukyas - the western Deccan powerख.
Pulakeshin Iपुलकेशिन प्रथम
c. 543-566. Made Vatapi a fortified capital and established independent Chalukya power. Later records celebrate his royal sacrifices.
Kirtivarman Iकीर्तिवर्मन प्रथम
Expanded against neighbouring Kadambas, Mauryas of Konkan and Nalas. His brother Mangalesha later ruled before a succession struggle.
Pulakeshin II
c. 610–642. The best-known Chalukya ruler. Ravikirti's Aihole prashasti celebrates his success against Harsha. Historians associate the confrontation with the Narmada–Vindhya region, but the inscription does not identify an exact battlefield. He established his brother Vishnuvardhana in Vengi and fought the Pallavas.
Vikramaditya Iविक्रमादित्य प्रथम
Recovered Vatapi after Pallava occupation and restored Chalukya strength. His reign shows why a captured capital did not always mean a dead dynasty.
Successfully campaigned at Kanchi. Records praise restraint toward its temples. Queens Lokamahadevi and Trailokyamahadevi patronised great Pattadakal temples.
The last Badami Chalukya ruler. Dantidurga broke Chalukya supremacy around 753. The transfer was not completed in a single day; Rashtrakuta control was further consolidated under Krishna I.बादामी चालुक्यों के अंतिम शासक।
Do not mix the branches: Badami/Vatapi Chalukyas are the sixth-eighth-century house here. Pulakeshin II's brother Vishnuvardhana founded the Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi. Much later, the Western Chalukyas of Kalyani rose after the Rashtrakutas.
The Kanchi-Vatapi war like a pendulum
- First movement: Pulakeshin II pressed into Pallava territory during Mahendravarman I’s reign. The Pallavas resisted; accounts differ in emphasis, so a simple “advance stopped” arrow should not erase Chalukya gains.
- Reversal: Narasimhavarman I, Mamalla, captured Vatapi around 642. The title Vatapikonda means conqueror of Vatapi. This connects a ruler, an event and a title without confusing him with Rajasimha, Narasimhavarman II.
- Recovery: Vikramaditya I restored Chalukya power; later Chalukya campaigns reached Kanchi again, notably under Vikramaditya II. The same capitals appear repeatedly because a temporary occupation was not always permanent annexation.
Capitals, movement and conflict

C. Rashtrakutas - feudatories become emperorsग.
Dantidurga
Active around 735–756, Dantidurga is regarded as the effective founder of imperial Rashtrakuta power. He broke Chalukya supremacy and extended influence through Malwa and parts of the Deccan. Do not treat this entire period as equally established independent imperial rule.
Krishna Iकृष्ण प्रथम
c. 756-774. Consolidated the new empire. Closely associated with Ellora's monumental Kailasa temple, Cave 16.
Dhruva
Carried warfare north, defeating major Pala and Gurjara-Pratihara rivals. The Deccan power became an actor in the struggle around Kanauj.
Govinda III
Extended Rashtrakuta prestige from the north to the southern peninsula. Wide campaign claims describe influence, not one equally administered block.
Amoghavarsha Iअमोघवर्ष प्रथम
c. 814-878. Long reign, Manyakheta capital, diplomacy, Jain patronage and Kannada learning. Linked with Kavirajamarga.
Indra III & Krishna III
Indra III attacked Kanauj; Krishna III campaigned deeply in the south. After Krishna III, succession strain and strong subordinates weakened the centre.
The struggle over Kanauj involved the Gurjara-Pratiharas, Palas and Rashtrakutas. It was a series of changing contests, not one battle fought by three armies on one day. For a Deccan ruler, a northern victory could bring prestige and submission without permanent administration of the entire route. After the Rashtrakutas, Tailapa II established the Later Western Chalukya dynasty. Calling it “of Kalyani” is a dynastic label; it does not mean Kalyani was already his capital in 973.
- Dantidurga rises from Chalukya subordinate to imperial founder.
- Krishna I consolidates the Deccan core.
- Dhruva and Govinda III campaign north.
- Amoghavarsha I is associated with Manyakheta and learning.
- Tailapa II replaces Rashtrakuta power in 973; the Later Western Chalukyas rise.973
- Campaign is not annexation. A ruler could defeat a rival, take gifts or secure submission and return home. Separate a raid, a tributary relationship and directly governed territory.
3. How Rule Reached Daily Life - Land, Officers, Villages and Routes3.
A king did not personally manage every field. Royal power moved through governors, military chiefs, landholders, assemblies, temples, merchants and village officers. The exact name changed by region, but the layered pattern is easy to see.

Read these offices by context. Rashtra, vishaya, bhukti, mandalam, kottam and nadu are territorial terms whose size and rank can vary; they are not a single all-India ladder. Rashtrapati here means a head of a territorial rashtra, not the modern elected President. Mahattaras are local elders or notable men. Ur and sabha refer to different local assembly settings, and the surviving evidence mainly describes influential landholders rather than equal participation by every resident.
Land grant: what really moves?
Why rulers granted land
To reward service, support religion and learning, extend cultivation, settle loyal groups and place authority in newly integrated areas.
Follow a grant from the charter to the field. The ruler or authorised donor specifies land, boundaries and benefits; a Brahmana or temple receives the stated rights; village residents now meet the listed obligations. A brahmadeya is a grant or settlement for Brahmanas. Revenue exemptions, labour demands and judicial rights are separate questions. A grant does not automatically transfer every possible power or prove that all cultivators owned their fields on equal terms.
Land, temple and labour

What temples didमंदिरों की भूमिका
Temples were sacred homes, but could also be employers, landholders, craft patrons, record keepers, festival centres and meeting points for local exchange.
Who carried the load
Cultivators produced the main surplus. Taxes, dues, irrigation work and sometimes compulsory service shaped village life. Benefits and burdens were unequal.
Routes made kingdoms wealthy
Simple economic picture: rain-fed and irrigated farms created revenue; land grants organised new agrarian zones; temples concentrated resources; towns and ports connected craft and overseas trade. No single word—“feudal” or “commercial”—fully describes every region and century.
Picture a chain from a western port through Vatapi and a Deccan market towards Kanchi and an eastern port. Cotton, spices, craft goods, horses, metals and grain moved through different sections of such networks. Merchants also travelled with ideas and met pilgrims; religious and commercial journeys could overlap. The drawing is a teaching connection, not proof of one continuous royal highway or that every item travelled the whole distance.

Shaiva and Vaishnava temples grew with Tamil Nayanar and Alvar devotion. Jain and Buddhist communities also existed. Mahendravarman's change of faith is preserved mainly through later devotional tradition.

Rashtrakuta worldराष्ट्रकूट क्षेत्र
Rulers supported Hindu and Jain establishments; Buddhist centres also continued in some regions, although the amount of evidence varies by area. Amoghavarsha’s Jain ties coexisted with worship of Hindu deities. Muslim merchants were present in western ports.

Bhakti means devotion: the Tamil hymns addressed a deity through songs associated with places and communities. Their later collection is different from the dates when individual poets lived. Likewise, an early surviving book does not mark the birth of a spoken language. Kavirajamarga shows an established Kannada literary world; its link to Amoghavarsha’s court should not become an unsupported claim that he alone wrote every line. Mahaviracharya is the mathematical author here, not Mahavira the Jain teacher of a much earlier age.
4. Architecture: Cutting Caves, Carving Monoliths and Building Temples4.
Architecture is easiest to understand through the way it is made. A cave is cut inward into a natural hill. A monolith is carved from one rock mass. A structural temple is assembled from separate stones. All three methods occur in the wider architectural world of these dynasties.
| Methodविधि | What the worker doesशिल्पी क्या करता है | How to recognise the resultपरिणाम कैसे पहचानें |
|---|---|---|
| Rock-cut caveशैलकृत गुफा | Removes rock inward into a hill or cliff. | Interior space remains connected to the parent rock; a sculpted façade can resemble built architecture. |
| Monolithएकाश्म रचना | Leaves and shapes a mass by removing surrounding rock. | The major form comes from one rock mass, as in a ratha or Kailasa’s main complex. |
| Structural templeसंरचनात्मक मंदिर | Quarries, dresses and assembles separate pieces. | Masonry joints and stacked courses form a built structure; this is not the same method as excavating a monolith. |
- Garbhagriha: the small inner sanctum housing the principal sacred image or symbol.
- Mandapa: a hall, often with pillars.
- Vimana: in this context, the southern temple superstructure over the sanctum.
- Shikhara: a tower or crowning term whose precise use depends on architectural context.
- Pradakshina: ritual circumambulation; a pradakshina path allows movement around the sacred focus.

- Rathas: monolithic temple models, traditionally named after Pandavas but not built by them.
- Open-air relief: the great panel read as “Descent of the Ganges” or “Arjuna's Penance.”
- Structural temples: Shore Temple complex belongs to the later Pallava phase.
- Water and landscape: natural rock, coast and carved space work together.
A relief keeps carved figures attached to a background surface; it differs from a freestanding sculpture. Mamallapuram’s great open-air panel is commonly called either the Descent of the Ganges or Arjuna’s Penance because its narrative identification is debated. A ratha is a monolithic architectural form here, not a vehicle. These names describe later interpretations or appearances, not proof that epic heroes commissioned the monuments.
Rock-cut and built forms

SSC memory trap: the Pancha Rathas are monolithic, not wheeled chariots and not five separate stone-block temples. Their Pandava names are later labels.
Chalukya laboratory - Aihole to Badami to Pattadakal
Aihole
A large experimental field of temple plans. Lad Khan, Durga temple and Jain Meguti are remembered. “Durga” here comes from a later fort association, not necessarily the original deity.
Badami
Rock-cut caves for Hindu and Jain worship stand beside structural temples. The red sandstone cliffs made religious space part of the fortified capital's landscape.
Pattadakal
Northern and southern tower forms meet. Queen Lokamahadevi built Virupaksha around 740 to celebrate Vikramaditya II's victory; Trailokyamahadevi patronised Mallikarjuna.
Remember the three places: Aihole = experiments → Badami = caves and structural temples → Pattadakal = mature synthesis. This is a memory aid, not an inevitable chronology with no overlapping construction.
At Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal, compare plans, halls and towers before attaching a style name. A curving northern tower is commonly discussed as Nagara; tiered southern forms as Dravida. A cave façade, a monolith and a built temple can borrow the same visible motifs while using different construction methods. The Pallava, Chalukya and Rashtrakuta traditions exchanged ideas through patrons and artisans; they were not three sealed styles. Remember Lokamahadevi–Virupaksha and Trailokyamahadevi–Mallikarjuna as specific patron links.

Rashtrakuta engineering - Kailasa at Ellora
Why Cave 16 is extraordinary
- A complete temple complex was released from living basalt by removing surrounding rock.
- The main mass is commonly explained as being carved from above downward. This required advance planning, but it is a broad construction principle rather than a recovered day-by-day work sequence.
- Courtyard, gateways, halls, sculpted walls and a towering sanctuary imitate structural architecture.
- It is closely associated with Rashtrakuta Krishna I, while work and additions continued over time.
- Ellora's wider 34-cave landscape includes Buddhist, Brahmanical and Jain monuments from several phases.
The essential engineering idea is subtractive construction: rock is removed and the intended temple mass is left. “Top down, then inward” is a useful schematic description, not a day-by-day excavation diary. Kailasa’s main commission is associated with Krishna I, but carving and additions extended over time. The illustration must not establish exact workers, work duration or a complete construction sequence. Nor should the entire Buddhist, Brahmanical and Jain Ellora complex be assigned to one Rashtrakuta king.
Leaving a temple within the rock

Use “Vesara” carefully. Textbooks often use it for a Deccan blend of Nagara and Dravida features. Historians also note that style names are later analytical tools and real monuments do not always fit one neat box.
5. Revision: Connect the Whole Story5.
First recall the capital. Then attach the ruler, war, text and monument. This five-hook method turns a long chapter into a connected picture.

Final spoken recall: “Kanchi's Pallavas carved coast-rock; Vatapi's Chalukyas built the A-B-P ladder; Manyakheta's Rashtrakutas raised Deccan power and cut Kailasa from a mountain.” Keep the transitions clean: Pallava ≠ Chola. Badami Chalukya ≠ Eastern Chalukya ≠ Kalyani Chalukya. Rashtrakuta power begins as Chalukya feudatory power but becomes a separate imperial dynasty.
Rulers fought across frontiers; craftsmen, merchants, poems and religious ideas also crossed them.
