The Concept of Development
Visualizing how children grow, so you never have to memorize jargon again.
1. Growth vs. Development
Growth is like a House
- π Measurable: You count bricks (Height, Weight).
- π’ Quantitative: Numbers only.
- π Stops: Once the roof is on, it's done (Maturity).
Development is like a Tree
- π Internal changes: Gets stronger, bears fruit.
- π Qualitative + Quantitative: Changes in kind AND numbers.
- βΎοΈ Lifelong: Womb to tomb, it never stops.
2. The Directions of Growth
Cephalocaudal (The "Top-Down" Rule)
Think of pouring water over a head. Babies act like bobbleheads. First they gain control of their heavy heads, then their torso, and finally they can stand on their feet.
Proximodistal (The "Inside-Out" Rule)
Think of control spreading from the heart. A baby will clumsily swat at a toy with their whole arm first. It takes months before they can use two fingertips to pick up a tiny Cheerio.
3. The Math of Development
Development = Heredity Γ Environment
Heredity (H)
The Seed. It decides your potential (e.g., Will you be a cherry tomato or a giant beefsteak?)
Environment (E)
The Soil & Sun. The home you grow up in, the food you eat, your teachers.
4. General to Specific Principle
General
Newborn cries with arms thrashing, legs kicking, and entire face turning red.
Specific
A 5-year-old sits quietly and lets a single tear roll down their cheek.
